Disease Management

Addison and Carrollton DoctorsAt Addison Internal Medicine, our doctors care for a wide variety of health concerns for patients ages 16 and older. Typically, we differentiate between diseases by their severity and duration. We often label health concerns as either acute or chronic. Our doctors and medical staff have the experience and expertise to properly diagnose, treat and manage both acute and chronic disease.

Acute versus Chronic Conditions

Acute

“Acute” refers to an illness or disease that comes on suddenly. The actual severity of acute illness can be mild (as in the case of a cold or sinus infection), or it can be serious or even life threatening in nature. The key is getting a prompt diagnosis and starting treatment for best results.

Chronic

“Chronic” conditions tend to be long-term illnesses that require extensive treatment over a longer period. It refers to a medical condition or illness that is persistent, recurring or long-lasting in their impact on the body. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 70% of all deaths in the U.S. are the result of chronic disease, which may include conditions like diabetes or heart disease.
